What Is Super Lawyers, and How Are Attorneys Selected?
Super Lawyers is a rating service published by Thomson Reuters. It recognizes attorneys who have attained a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. Selections are made every year, state by state, through a patented multi-phase process:
Peer nominations. Attorneys nominate their peers. Self-nomination is not allowed.
Independent research. The Super Lawyers research team evaluates each candidate on 12 indicators of peer recognition and professional achievement.
Peer evaluation. Candidates are reviewed by practice area by a panel of attorneys.
The final cut is small. Up to 5 percent of the attorneys in a state are named to Super Lawyers, and no more than 2.5 percent are named to Rising Stars, a list for attorneys who are 40 or younger or have been in practice 10 years or less.

It is one useful data point, and it is worth being clear about its limits.
What it tells you. Peers nominated and evaluated this attorney, and an independent research team reviewed his record. For a lawyer who has been recognized for 15 consecutive years, it points to a sustained reputation among other attorneys.
What it doesn't tell you. It is not a prediction or guarantee of any result in your case. Every case turns on its own facts, and prior results do not guarantee a similar outcome.

Whatever list a lawyer appears on, here is what to look for:
Trial experience. Insurance companies know which firms will try a case and which will settle cheaply. Ask how many cases the attorney has taken to verdict.
